2. _I_n_s_t_a_l_l_a_t_i_o_n__I_n_f_o_r_m_a_t_i_o_n
This chapter lists supplemental information to the _I_R_I_S
_S_o_f_t_w_a_r_e _I_n_s_t_a_l_l_a_t_i_o_n _G_u_i_d_e. The information listed here is
product- and release-specific; use it with the Installation
Guide to install this product.
2.1 _P_C_-_N_F_S__s_e_r_v_e_r_-_s_i_d_e__S_u_b_s_y_s_t_e_m_s
PC-NFS includes these subsystems:
_p_c_n_f_s_d._m_a_n._m_a_n_p_a_g_e_s PC-NFS daemon manual pages
_p_c_n_f_s_d._m_a_n._r_e_l_n_o_t_e_s PC-NFS daemon release notes
_p_c_n_f_s_d._s_p_o_o_l._d_i_r_e_c_t_o_r_y Print Spooling Directory
_p_c_n_f_s_d._s_w._b_a_s_e PC-NFS daemon software
2.2 _P_C_-_N_F_S__S_e_r_v_e_r__S_i_d_e__S_u_b_s_y_s_t_e_m__D_i_s_k__S_p_a_c_e__R_e_q_u_i_r_e_m_e_n_t_s
This section lists the PC-NFS option subsystems and their
sizes.
If you are installing this product for the first time, the
subsystems marked ``default'' are the ones that are
installed if you use the ``go'' menu item. To install a
different set of subsystems, use the ``install,''
``remove,'' ``keep,'' and ``step'' commands in _i_n_s_t to
customize the list of subsystems to be installed, then
select the ``go'' menu item.
Note: The listed subsystem sizes are approximate.
Subsystem Name Subsystem Size
(512-byte blocks)
_p_c_n_f_s_d._m_a_n._m_a_n_p_a_g_e_s (default) 13
_p_c_n_f_s_d._m_a_n._r_e_l_n_o_t_e_s (default) 23
_p_c_n_f_s_d._s_p_o_o_l._d_i_r_e_c_t_o_r_y (default) 1

2.3 _I_n_s_t_a_l_l_a_t_i_o_n__M_e_t_h_o_d
All of the subsystems for PC-NFS can be installed using
IRIX. You do not need to use the miniroot.
2.4 _P_r_e_r_e_q_u_i_s_i_t_e_s
Your workstation must be running at least release IRIX 6.5
to use PC-NFS release 6.5.
The _n_f_s._s_w._n_f_s and _n_f_s._s_w._n_f_s subsystems are prerequisites
for running the _n_f_s._s_w._d_s_k_l_e_s_s__c_l_i_e_n_t,
_n_f_s._s_w._d_s_k_l_e_s_s__s_e_r_v_e_r, and _n_f_s._s_w._d_s_k_l_e_s_s__s_e_r_v_e_r__4_0_5
subsystems.
2.5 _C_o_m_p_a_t_i_b_i_l_i_t_y__f_o_r__D_i_s_k_l_e_s_s__S_y_s_t_e_m_s
A server must be running IRIX 6.5 (or higher) to support
IRIX 6.5 clients. A server running IRIX 6.5 can support IRIX
4.0.x clients, but an IRIX 6.5 server cannot support IRIX
3.2.x or IRIX 3.3.x clients. At this time, NFS v.3 is not
supported on diskless clients.
If you plan to maintain IRIX 4.0.x diskless clients on a
server after the server is upgraded to IRIX 6.5, you must
modify the pathname to each client's boot file. Use these
instructions to modify boot files
A server must be running IRIX 6.5 (or higher) to support
IRIX 6.5 clients. A server running IRIX 6.5 can support IRIX
4.0.x clients, but an IRIX 6.5 server cannot support IRIX
3.2.x or IRIX 3.3.x clients. At this time, NFS v.3 is not
supported on diskless clients.
If you plan to maintain IRIX 4.0.x diskless clients on a
server after the server is upgraded to IRIX 6.5, you must
modify the pathname to each client's boot file. Use these
instructions to modify boot files:
1. For all workstation models except Indigo R4000's, reset
the _b_o_o_t_f_i_l_e NVRAM variable. You must reset NVRAM variables
from the PROM monitor:
>> setenv bootfile bootp()_s_e_r_v_e_r:/var/boot/4.X/_c_l_i_e_n_t/unix
For Indigo R4000 models, reset the _S_y_s_t_e_m_P_a_r_t_i_t_i_o_n and
_O_S_L_o_a_d_e_r variables:
>> setenv SystemPartition bootp()_s_e_r_v_e_r:/var/boot/4.X/_c_l_i_e_n_t
>> setenv OSLoader /unix
- 3 -
2. Reboot the client to reset its NVRAM variables.
If you want to install new IRIX 4.0.x share or client trees
on a server after upgrading the server to IRIX 6.5, complete
these steps:
1. Install the _n_f_s._s_w._d_s_k_l_e_s_s__s_e_r_v_e_r__4_0_5 subsystem on the
server.
2. Use the installation tools in /_v_a_r/_b_o_o_t/_4._X to install
the share tree, client tree, and swap trees on the server.
Refer to the _D_i_s_k_l_e_s_s _W_o_r_k_s_t_a_t_i_o_n _A_d_m_i_n_i_s_t_r_a_t_i_o_n _G_u_i_d_e that
accompanied your version 4.0.x software for instructions
(document number 007-0855-020).
3. Set the boot file variables on each client (see the
previous instructions for setting NVRAM bootfile variables).
2.6 _C_o_n_f_i_g_u_r_a_t_i_o_n___F_i_l_e_s
This section lists installed files that can be edited to
contain site-specific changes. Please see the _A_d_m_i_n_i_s_t_r_a_t_i_o_n
_G_u_i_d_e and the _N_I_S _A_d_m_i_n_i_s_t_r_a_t_i_o_n _G_u_i_d_e for details.
The following configuration files determine if a daemon is
started during system initialization. A daemon or subsystem
is enabled if its configuration flag in the /_e_t_c/_c_o_n_f_i_g
directory is in the ``on'' state. Use the _c_h_k_c_o_n_f_i_g(_1_M)
command to turn a flag on or off.
/_e_t_c/_c_o_n_f_i_g/_a_u_t_o_m_o_u_n_t Start _a_u_t_o_m_o_u_n_t(_1_M).
/_e_t_c/_c_o_n_f_i_g/_l_o_c_k_d Start _l_o_c_k_d(_1_M) and _s_t_a_t_d(_1_M).
/_e_t_c/_c_o_n_f_i_g/_n_f_s Start the NFS daemons, export
file systems listed in
/_e_t_c/_e_x_p_o_r_t_s, and mount the
NFS file systems listed in
/_e_t_c/_f_s_t_a_b.
/_e_t_c/_c_o_n_f_i_g/_y_p Start the NIS daemon(s).
/_e_t_c/_c_o_n_f_i_g/_y_p_m_a_s_t_e_r Become the NIS master server.
/_e_t_c/_c_o_n_f_i_g/_y_p_s_e_r_v Become an NIS slave server.
Change the following files to reflect your site's setup.
/_e_t_c/_c_o_n_f_i_g/_a_u_t_o_m_o_u_n_t._o_p_t_i_o_n_s Site-specific options.
Contains a default
configuration.
